Level 8-7

Homophones #3

passed, past, would, wood, their, there, meat, meet, affect, effect

This is the third of four levels focusing on homophones. These five homophone pairs are challenging! (We saved they're for an upcoming contractions level.)

For the words affect and effect, it's helpful to remind students that affect is typically used as a verb, as in "Practicing Rocket Spelling positively affects your spelling skills." The word effect, by contrast, is generally used as a noun. "Learning to spell well has a positive effect on students' confidence."

Some people like the RAVEN acronym to remember the difference between affect and effect. Remember: Affect is a Verb; Effect is a Noun.
