ie and ei vowel pairs

piece, field, neighbor, weigh, believe, receive, view, chief, friend, height

Confusion between ie and ei vowel pairs is so common that one of the most popular grammar catchphrases of all time deals with this very topic: "i before e except after c, and in words that say a like in neighbor and weigh".

While there are many exceptions to that rule (and there is more to that rule that what we quoted above), it's a start at least. Nine out of the 10 words in this pattern fit the rule from that common rhyme, with the outlier being the word height.
