Building from the -igh pattern as a long i ending in level 6-2, level 6-3 now explores the very common -ight pattern. The ten words used in this level are right, light, might, night, sight, tight, bright, fight, fright, and flight. These words all use -ight as a word ending, although it wouldn't be difficult for students to see how a compound word or a word with a suffix could use the -ight pattern within the middle of a word. As you teach this level, it might be beneficial to contrast this pattern with words that use an -ite ending to make the same sound (such as kite, write, or bite).

Level 6-4 focuses on the varied sounds the -ough pattern can make. The ten words used in this level are enough, tough, rough, cough, although, dough, through, though, doughnut, and toughen. In four of those words, the -ough pattern makes a sound like -uff. In four other words, the -ough pattern makes a long o sound. In the word 'through,' -ough makes an oo sound. And in 'cough', it makes a 4th different sound. Students who have made it this far have definitely graduated to some difficult word patterns now!
